MONOLOGUE – April 28, 2010
In the meantime I thought I’d give you a little tour of some of the fascinating folks that I had a chance to meet with over the weekend at a program know as the David Horowitz Freedom Center, Santa Barbara, a really extraordinary program. I find these weekends, this was now the third annual one conducted by David Horowitz’s Center on the ‘left’ coast, they alternate with programs on the ‘right’ coast in the fall, really extraordinary events involving some of the finest people that I have had the privilege of working with and being exposed to, not just in the security policy arena but more generally in national affairs.
For example among the speakers at this particular weekend were Senators Jim Demint of South Carolina and Senator John Kyl, the second ranking Republican in the United States Senate hailing from Arizona, both of them gave, I thought, very important and insightful addresses on challenges they see our country facing at the moment. David Horowitz himself was in great form – David, as I’m sure you know, is not only the founder of this freedom center but a remarkable man who made the epic conversion from being one of the country’s most radical leftists, really communists, or revolutionaries as they would call themselves, to one of its most informed, most influential conservatives. He brings together folks of a similar mind and with similar capabilities – that’s really important to be exposed to.
Among them were Daniel Pipes of the Middle East Forum in Philadelphia; Major General Paul Valilly, former Chairman of the Center’s Military Committee I’m proud to say, a man who has served his country with distinction in uniform and is now doing great work with the Scott Valilly Soldiers’ Memorial Fund among other activities; Andy McCarthy, our frequent guest here at Secure Freedom Radio, hailing from National Review and the Foundation for Defense of Democracy; and John Yu, now professor at Berkeley in the law school there, a man who performed yeoman service to our country in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 on issues that have on issues that have brought him much notoriety I’m sorry to say. But, at this weekend here and at Secure Freedom Radio he conveys, I think, with authority the clarity of his thinking and the importance of the insights that he has had on issues like interrogation and detention of illegal enemy combatants, or I should say unlawful enemy combatants who have, thank God, been apprehended by our forces.
So, each and every one of these individuals contributed much to my thinking about the kinds of struggles we’re in today. There were others as well who I think were important for the audience and hopefully the website at David Horowitz Freedom Center will show all of their report. But let me give you the concluding, the pièce de resistance as the French say, speech that was given by Victor David Hansen. Victor has joined us from time-to-time on Secure Freedom Radio, he is truly one of the most, I think, important historians and strategic thinkers of our time. He stitched together in a really elegant way the sort of historical character of the Obama administration and what it likely means – that under President Obama we are pursuing policies and directions that have brought us great grief in the past. I’ve called this, as I think you may know, this Obama doctrine, ‘undermine our allies, embolden our enemies and diminish our country’.
And I think Victor said it much more beautifully than I could but reinforced it, validated it, and if anything, added great texture to what it means if we do those three things. Not just for us but for freedom-loving people everywhere. I suggest to you we must not and we’re committed to not allowing that to happen here, and I hope by listening to us you will help ensure that we don’t go down that road.
